TITLE: End of Summer Round-Up, Part 1
DATE: 9/22/2008 07:20:00 AM
In the final hours of summer sun, I harvested 3 Italian eggplants, 2 Japanese eggplant, a large fistful of chilies (of unknown variety – my neighbor Craig gave me this plant), 8 cucumbers and 3 tomatoes. I picked a gallon of basil leaves to freeze. The celery and Brussels sprouts continue quietly growing – they will be the showcase of the autumn harvest.

I just got a huge bag of fresh basil and a bunch of chilis from my coworker. It was rather unexpected though I am certainly grateful. So I guess some freezing is in my immediate future.
I am sorely going to miss the summer tomatoes though, as I have no supply of those. :(

Melissa, It's not too late to can tomatoes! You could probably still get some at the farmer's market this weekend. What will you do with the chilies -- I smoked mine in oil and packed them in ice cube trays in the freezer.

Caterpillars are munching my basil. I suspect at the rate they are dining, there won't be enough to make pesto. And they've started on my precious chilli plants. I sprayed some damn thing which is supposed to get rid of them, but it didn't work.
